Sources & methodology
Ownership data on BrandRootMap is compiled so each brand page can show a clear parent conclusion with a traceable trail. We mix curated high-confidence edges for major consumer brands with structured public data for long-tail coverage — then layer categories and alternatives on top.
Primary sources
Curated company portfolios
Hand-checked rows from parent-company brand lists and official portfolio pages. Used for head conglomerates where accuracy matters most for who-owns queries.
Wikidata statements
Structured ownership / part-of relations (CC0). Useful for scale and discovery; always shown with source context and lower default confidence than curated edges.
Public disclosures
Where applicable, annual reports, investor brand lists, and acquisition announcements help confirm or update ultimate parents.
Category signals
Taxonomy keywords, Wikidata class hints, and reviewed AI suggestions for remaining gaps — never as a silent override of curated ownership.
How an ownership conclusion is chosen
- Each brand→company link stores a source URL, source kind, and confidence score.
- When multiple active edges conflict, higher-confidence and curated edges win over older or lower-confidence Wikidata edges.
- Ultimate parent is recomputed from the live edge graph so pages show a single top-of-chain company when the path is clear.
- Brand pages surface the sources used for the main conclusion; treat company disclosures as authoritative if something looks stale after a deal.
Categories and alternatives
Categories describe the consumer vertical (skincare, snacks, beer, telecom, and so on). A brand may sit in more than one category when that matches how people search.
Alternatives pages list same-category brands that do not share the same ultimate parent. That is an ownership-aware peer list — not a ranking of product quality, price, or ethics.
- Non-consumer long-tail brands get their own verticals when needed, instead of being forced into CPG categories.
- Low-confidence or AI-suggested category links may appear with review status until accepted.
- Empty or weak alternative sets are a data gap, not a recommendation to buy nothing.
What we do not claim
- We do not provide investment, legal, or purchasing advice.
- We are not a live M&A wire; post-deal updates can lag.
- We are not affiliated with listed brands or parents.
- Confidence scores are editorial heuristics, not legal certainty.
